A patient's fundamental right to choose or refuse treatment is the foundation for the provision of quality health care. All health care professionals have a duty to honor a patient's right to self-determination.

On November 16, 2017, Moses Suarez and Betsy Ballek will present a special presentation titled, "Informed Consent & 4th Amendment Rights," at the National Association of Hispanic Nurses at Loyola University School of Nursing. They will discuss the role health care professionals play when informed consent and the 4th Amendment prohibition of unreasonable search and seizure intersect in the context of drug and blood alcohol testing at the direction of law enforcement. The recent 2017 video that went viral involving a Utah nurse's violent arrest for refusing to perform a blood draw, highlights the importance of understanding patient-consent law.
