Illinois State Bar Association's Bench & Bar Newsletter

Often times when a case is called, an attorney will approach the bench and inform the court that he or she is "stepping up" for the attorney of record although the step-up attorney does not have an appearance on file.

In his latest article "Stepping Up May Need to Step Out," Mike Cortina questions why this very common practice exists and why attorneys should consider revising their business models to adopt the utilization of technology or hire local counsel that can file an appearance in the case. This article was published in the Vol. 50, No. 3, September 2019 edition of the newsletter.
